Pilgrimages

Pilgrimage entails embarking on an inner and outer journey to a holy destination. Every day can be a part of the trip.

The rhythm of the pilgrimage is often the day's walk with rests every hour or so, providing natural breaks for reflection or prayer, silence or singing.
A picnic in the middle of the day and an evening meal, often in community with the people you met along the way.  Valuable moments for sharing experiences and thoughts.

After this, the evening and restful night's sleep remain. You can use this rhythm for shorter or longer hikes.

The pilgrimage can be a mountain hike in a magnificent mountain setting away from the paths. You can wander on your own or in groups. From Pilgrimshotellet there are also hiking trails. These are best suited for day trips. It can be a great feeling to leave the trails however and head out on the mountain range.  To do this, you need map and compass or a guide.

  • Longer pilgrimage hikes: You will want to aim for Stiklestad (about 2 weeks) or Nidaros, Trondheim (about 3 weeks). The marked Pilgrim Path closest to reach is Nordleden. To Stiklestad you can also walk through two national parks: Lierne and Blåfjella / Skjaekerfjella. These are hikes off the paths, off the beaten track and "into the Wild".

There are several pilgrim hikes in Sweden and Norway that are suitable for those who want to head out on a pilgrimage for a week or even several months. Read more on the Pilgrims Association in Sweden and Pilgrimsleden to Trondheim.

8 nature reserves, 3 national parks & 5 churches

There are 8 nature reserves and 3 national parks in the immediate area and 5 beautiful churches placed amongst beautiful nature. These can provide great starting points or destinations for your pilgrimage, if you wish.

You may want to use existing trails or routes around these locations. Most hiking trails in Frostviken and Lierne (Norwegian side of border) are suitable for day trips while for your longer journeys you will need to bring tents and other equipment.  Just ask us and we will assist you.

The small pilgrimage

The small pilgrimage is the one inside our hotel. Seven key words are placed in the corridor, where you can do a little morning or evening walk and meditate on these seven mindful words.

These words are inscribed on the same type of posts that can be seen on many pilgrim locations in Sweden and Norway. At the top of the post is the Olof symbol. This symbol combines the landmark S:t Hans cross with the Olofs cross. The symbol is used on pilgrimages related to S:t Olof and Trondheim, the former Nidaros.
